Summer Starts with Fecal Bacteria Fail

The creeks in our watershed have a serious fecal bacteria pollution problem. Last week, 9 out of 9 sites failed to meet the Maryland State criteria for safe water play (410 MPN per 100 ml). The week before, 5 out of 9 failed and the first week, 6 sites failed.

Who is Living in the Creek?

Our stream team, lead by Frank Sanford, was in the Little Falls Branch below Mass. Avenue this past Saturday hunting for the macro-invertebrates who depend on the creek for shelter and food. They found 12 different species - including broadwinged Damselflies.

EYA asks to Remove All Large Trees at GEICO Site

The site plans for the proposed development at GEICO site include asking for a variance so that they can remove almost all the specimen sized trees on the 29 acre campus to make room for apartments and town houses. The impact to the environment of the lost of every mature shade tree cannot be overstated.

Monitoring in the Rain

Yes, it was raining on Sunday, April 19. Yes, our monitoring team was on site at the Little Falls Branch to do the spring census of macroinvertibrates. Frank Sanford, team leader, conceded that it might be a monitoring first! We don’t have any photographic evidence though.
