Leggett Seeks Applicants for County-wide Recreation and Parks Advisory Board

County Executive Isiah Leggett is seeking applicants to fill 18 vacancies on the County-wide Recreation and Parks Advisory Board (formerly the County-wide Recreation Advisory Board). The vacancies are for three representatives from each of the County’s four recreation areas: Down County (Silver Spring and Western Area), East County, Mid-County, and Upcounty. Six vacancies are for representatives from the County at-large, to represent a cross-section of the population of the County.

The 25-member Board includes the 18 public members and seven ex officio members representing the Dept. of Parks and Recreation, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), the Board of Education, the immediate past chair of the Board, the Office of Community Use of Public Facilities, the Community Action Board, the Commission on Aging, and the Commission on People with Disabilities. The Board advises the County Executive, County Council, and the Director of the Department of Recreation in matters relating to recreation policies and services, and assists in developing and maintaining relationships with the Board of Education, M-NCPPC and various voluntary agencies in the County in matters affecting recreation programs and services. The Board also recommends budget items and new facilities to the Director, appears at special Department of Recreation functions, and at times visits recreational programs and activities.

Members serve three-year terms without compensation, but are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for meetings attended. Meetings are usually held the first Monday evening of each month in Silver Spring, with the exception of July and August.

Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, gender, geography, disability and ethnicity are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Leggett’s appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications of those selected for appointment are made public as part of the confirmation process. The deadline for application is November 30, 2016
