State of the Streams

A Special Report on Stream Health in the Area

Meadowbrook Local Park (Candy Cane City)
7901 Meadowbrook Lane
Chevy Chase, MD 20815

RSVP at https://forms.office.com/r/vUwAzCLjGg?origin=lprLink

Come learn about the health of five streams across DC, MD & VA at the Nature Forward State of the Streams Kickoff! Nature Forward evaluated five streams across DC, MD & VA (including the Little Falls Branch) and found that all five were harmed by increasing impervious surface and invasive plants, and by decreasing forests. The good news is that there are actions that residents and communities can take to protect our streams. You’ll hear firsthand from local leaders and advocates on the challenges our streams face and what we can do to help them.

Refreshments will be provided.

Event will occur rain or shine.

Spring Stream Monitoring

Discover what creek critters live in the Little Falls Branch

LFWA monitors the Little Falls Branch four times a year - doing a biological census of the macro-invertebrates that live on the bottom of the creek. This count of benthic organisms - numbers of individuals and diversity - gives us a picture of the health of our creek. By mapping the data over the years, we have good assessment of how well our stream is surviving in our dense urban area. Our monitoring is done in partnership with the Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS).

This event is primarily for trained monitors. Before going into the field, new monitors should have a basic knowledge of macroinvertebrate identification and stream ecology, either from previous training or by attending the ANS water quality training sessions. If you are interested in taking the ANS training, we have scholarships available. We ask that people interested commit to monitoring the Little Falls branch for at least two seasons. Please contact Sarah Morse, stormwater@LFWA.org, for information about the ANS courses and scholarships.

This activity is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Students 14 and under must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

QR Guided Hike to the Mouth of the Little Falls

to Jan 15

QR Guided Hike to the Mouth of the Little Falls

This is a self-guided hike to the mouth of the Little Falls. Use the QR Codes along the way for directions and points of interest. We will send you a map of the route with stop marked with your registration confirmation. The QR Codes will be up until the end of the day, January 15, so please take the hike at your convenience.

Little Falls Stream Valley Park
Massachusetts Avenue Entrance
Parking at the gravel parking lot on Little Falls parkway.

Start the New Year with a hike to the mouth of the Little Falls Branch. It’s an easy 5 miles round trip, almost all on hard surfaces. Start at the entrance to the Little Falls Stream Valley Park to read the first QR code. Then head down the Hiker/biker trail and follow the map to the mouth of the Little Falls just below Lock 5. Look for our QR signs along the route. There are 10 stops. We have directions at each stop and lots of fun facts about the park and surrounding areas.

The directions take you all the way to mouth of the Little Falls on the Potomac (pictured above). The last bit, however, is not a proper trail. If you want to go all the way to the Potomac, there is about 100 yards of scrambling over rocks and through the brush. You might want to have hiking boots if you’re going to go all the way to the river.

This hike is not a loop; to return to your car, retrace your steps. There is an optional side trail on the return trip between Stops 8 and 4 that takes you through the woods. A map for an adventurous return trip is included on our website for this trail.

No smart phone? Don't know what QR codes are? No worries. CLICK HERE for directions and information about each stop.
